I think I may have an eating problem

An eating problem is not about weight or willpower. It shows up as food, eating or body shape taking up more and more of your thinking — restricting, losing control over eating, making yourself sick, or feeling that food has come to dominate your life.

This screening uses the SCOFF questionnaire: five quick questions designed as a first check, not a full assessment. It takes under a minute.

About the SCOFF

The SCOFF questionnaire is a brief screen for possible indicators of eating-related concerns, consisting of five short questions. It is designed to flag quickly who might benefit from a fuller evaluation.

The name is an acronym drawn from the themes of its questions; what matters is the meaning of the questions rather than the acronym itself.

How it is scored

  • Each question scores 1 for "Yes" and 0 for "No". The total is the sum of the five, to a maximum of 5.
  • The screen is positive at 2 or more, or if the closing question about the effect on your life is answered "Yes".

What the result means

A screening result is not a diagnosis. It tells you whether your answers resemble a pattern that is worth discussing with a professional.

Two people with the same score can be in very different situations, and only a qualified clinician can assess yours.

Where to get help

The Health and Counseling Center at Hamad Bin Khalifa University offers confidential counseling to the HBKU community. You do not need a screening result to get in touch.
