About this screening · Obsessive Compulsive Disorder · OCI-R
I get stuck in thoughts that won’t go away, and I have to repeat certain things just to feel a sense of relief
Intrusive thoughts happen to almost everyone. Obsessive-compulsive difficulties are when unwanted thoughts keep returning and cause real distress, and when checking, washing, counting, ordering or mental rituals become the only way to get relief — for a while.
This screening uses the OCI-R, eighteen questions about how much these experiences have bothered you during the past month. It takes about three minutes.

About the OCI-R
The Obsessive Compulsive Inventory–Revised (OCI-R) is an 18-item self-report measure of obsessive-compulsive symptoms across six domains: washing, checking, ordering, obsessing, hoarding and mental neutralising.
It measures how much distress each kind of experience has caused you recently, rather than how often it happened.
How it is scored
- Each item is scored 0–4, giving a total range of 0–72.
- A total of 21 or above is a positive screen.

What the result means
A screening result is not a diagnosis. It tells you whether your answers resemble a pattern that is worth discussing with a professional.
Two people with the same score can be in very different situations, and only a qualified clinician can assess yours.
Where to get help
The Health and Counseling Center at Hamad Bin Khalifa University offers confidential counseling to the HBKU community. You do not need a screening result to get in touch.
